Dietary Guidelines for Diabetes Patients

A diet for maintaining proper blood sugar, serum-lipid concentration, and optimum nutritional conditions is critical in diabetes treatment. It is important to observe the fixed amount of food during a meal using food exchange lists and to eat regularly. It is also required to increase the intake of fiber while reducing the consumption of salt, cholesterol, and saturated fatty acids to regulate blood sugar levels and prevent complications.

  • How to Increase the Intake of Fiber

    1. Have multi-grain rice, not just white rice.

    2. Increase the intake of vegetables and seaweeds (seaweed, kelp).

    3. Take fresh vegetables or fruits with the peel on instead of juice (e.g., green juice).

  • Alcohol

    1. Find it hard to control blood sugar levels, take insulin/oral hypoglycemic agent (OHA), or are suffering from complications

    2. Are suffering from obesity, low body weight (LBW), or have weak self-control

  • How to Reduce the Intake of Salt

    1. Avoid salty food as much as possible.

    2. Avoid salted or soy sauce-marinated food (jangajji, kimchi, etc.) canned food, and smoked food (e.g., sausage, bacon, etc.).

    3. Reduce the use of salty seasoning (e.g., salt, soy sauce, doenjang (soybean paste), gochujang (chili paste), ketchup, etc.). Instead, use spices such as black pepper, Korean chili flakes, lemon extract, vinegar, and mustard.

    4. Avoid food with high sodium content.

  • How to Reduce Cholesterol and Saturated Fatty Acid

    1. Remove fat when you eat meat.

    2. Reduce the intake of processed meat (e.g., smoked/canned food, sausage, etc.). Instead, eat fish if possible.

    3. Have one or two egg(s) a week.

    4. Drink skim/low-fat milk.

    5. To reduce the intake of fast food, choose grilled, oven-baked, and jjim (braised) dishes over fritters and jeon (Korean pancake).
